Yong Chan Ahn, MD, PhD

Yong Chan Ahn is a Professor of Radiation Oncology department of Samsung Medical Center (SMC), Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine (SKKU-SOM).

Dr. Ahn graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in Feb. 1984 and finished Radiation Oncology residency program at Seoul National University Hospital and acquired Board qualification from Korean Society for Radiation Oncology (KOSRO) in Feb. 1992. After spending 1 year at Roswell Park Cancer Institute as a visiting research scholar (Jul. 1992-June 1993) and another year at British Columbia Cancer Agency as a clinical fellow (Jul. 1993-Apr. 1994), Dr. Ahn joined SMC since May of 1994. Dr. Ahn got PhD degree from Seoul National University Graduate College of Medicine in Feb. 2003.

Dr. Ahn served as Chairman of Radiation Oncology department of SMC/SKKU-SOM from Sep. 2005 till Aug. 2009 and as Vice-dean of SKKU-SOM from Jan. 2014 till Dec. 2015. Dr. Ahn has contributed a lot to the construction of Samsung Comprehensive Cancer Center that opened in Jan. in 2008 and to the decision to install Proton therapy facility that started clinical operation in Dec. 2015.

Head and neck and thoracic oncology have been the main interest fields of Dr. Ahn throughout his professional career. Until recently, he participated in the publication of more than 160 scientific articles to the SCI or SCI(E) indexed journals, and played the principal investigator role in over one-fourth of them. Dr. Ahn has actively served, with directorship, a few domestic oncologic societies including KOSRO, Korean Society for Head and Neck Oncology (KSHNO), Korea Cancer Association (KCA), Korean Association for Lung Cancer (KALC), and Korean Society for Spine Tumor (KSST). Currently Dr. Ahn is Vice-President (President-elect) of KSHNO and has served as Vice-Editor of “Cancer Research and Treatment” (official journal of KCA, SCI(E)-indexed with impact factor of 4.245 in 2015) during the past 9 years. Dr. Ahn also holds the membership of a few international academic societies including ASTRO, ESTRO, IASLC and PTCOG.
